Melgaço: nature, adventure and unforgettable scenery

Situated in the far north of Portugal, on the border with Spain, Melgaço is a destination where nature reveals itself in all its splendour. Amidst mountains, rivers, lush green valleys and traditional villages, you’ll find the perfect setting to slow down and enjoy authentic experiences.

Melgaço is also one of the five entry points to the Peneda-Gerês National Park, via the Lamas de Mouro Gate, an excellent starting point for discovering one of Portugal’s most extraordinary natural treasures.

The park offers a vast diversity of landscapes, including forests, woodlands, rivers, streams, waterfalls and mountain trails. Its natural wealth includes species such as the Iberian wolf, the roe deer and the Garrano horses, as well as a diverse range of flora, including holly and iconic species such as the Gerês lily.

Wildlife spotting depends on the season and natural conditions, making every walk a unique experience.

What is there to see and do in Melgaço?

During your stay at Lúcia House, take the opportunity to explore some of the region’s most iconic places:

  • Melgaço’s historic centre: discover the medieval castle, the traditional streets and the town’s historical heritage.

  • Castro Laboreiro: visit this mountain village, known for its ancestral traditions, ancient bridges, archaeological remains and breathtaking landscapes.

  • Porta de Lamas de Mouro: visit the Peneda-Gerês National Park visitor centre and set off to explore the surrounding trails and natural areas.

  • Walkways and trails along the River Minho: enjoy peaceful walks by the river, surrounded by beautiful scenery.

  • Termas do Peso: treat yourself to a moment of wellbeing and relaxation in the thermal waters.

  • Solar do Alvarinho: discover the history and tradition of one of the region’s most iconic wines.

  • Cinema Museum and the ‘Memória e Fronteira’ Centre: immerse yourself in the history, culture and identity of Melgaço.

Adventure and outdoor activities

For those who love adventure, Melgaço offers experiences to suit all tastes and levels of adrenaline. You can try rafting, canyoning, canoeing, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing or other outdoor activities, depending on the season and the availability of local operators.

If you prefer a more peaceful experience, you’ll find walking trails, viewpoints from which to admire the scenery, and secluded natural spots that are ideal for taking photographs, relaxing and enjoying the tranquillity of the mountains.

Spain is right next door

Its proximity to Spain makes Melgaço an excellent starting point for a short break across the border. Cross the River Minho and discover neighbouring Galicia, explore the border towns, take in new scenery and enjoy Galician cuisine and culture. A perfect opportunity to add an international touch to your holiday.

Authentic flavours of the Alto Minho

No visit to Melgaço is complete without discovering the regional cuisine. Let yourself be won over by the traditional flavours, local produce and the hospitality of the Minho region.

Among the specialities to try are kid, traditional meat dishes, trout and, in season, lamprey from the River Minho. To accompany your meal, there’s nothing better than a glass of Alvarinho wine, renowned for its freshness, aroma and deep connection to the Melgaço and Monção region.

Be sure also to explore the local restaurants, sample regional produce and discover the flavours that form part of this region’s identity.
